What is Diction?

Diction is the selection and uses the words in writing to communicate the message to the readers in a particular voice or style. It is a good way to create a particular writing style for writers and many famous writers have their style of writing. There are 8 unique types of Diction let’s see each one of them with an example.

The usage of words itself clearly shows their age and character. So as a writer you should have an idea about different types of diction to use in your writing.

1. Formal diction

In this type, the writer doesn’t follow any slang for a common language that is formal diction is full of sophisticated language. Usually, business documents or any other legal papers are in this type only

Example: If any issue arises in business means, the writer will create content like “I will address and solve that issue right away”. As you can see there are no informal words here and the message has the perfect choice of words

2. Informal diction

It is a conversational and natural type so it is in narrative stories and literature. In this, a writer has more freedom to express his style or voice for characters. So Short Stories and films have these kinds of words

Example: Some examples of this type are, Yup, Nope, Nah, etc. So these words are for day-to-day life use. So if the writer uses these words in his writing means it feels so natural to people

3. Pedantic diction

This action is used when the writer wants to make his writing more academic-oriented or highly detailed. This type is usually used in literature to convey the characters of highly educated persons

Example: Some words like thesaurus, dictate, academic, and dictionary are referred to as Pedantic.

4. Colloquial diction

The writer uses this to represent characters that belong to a certain region or period. So in this, regional slang and words are used

Example: Words like Wanna or Gonna is an examples of Colloquial

5. Slang Diction

In this type, words originating from a particular group of peoples or cultures are highly used. So it mostly contains short words that are used by regional speakers as a replacement for big words

Example: Words like Gucci, Dope, and Lit are some examples of this type

6. Abstract diction

These are words used by a writer to express your Idea or emotions which cannot be experienced physically by The Reader. But it will impact their feelings and thoughts

Example: Words like love, freedom, sad are some examples of Abstract 

7. Concrete diction

These are the words used by writers to express physical things in writing like sun, book, tree extra. The Reader can’t see it but they will have some idea about the physical appearance of that word

Example: “The Sun is so Shiny” or “I ate a Mango” are some examples

8. Poetic diction

In this kind, rhythmic or descriptive language is mostly used. So It mostly contains lyrical words so this type of dictionary are highly used in poem and songs writings

Examples: Dulcify, Dome are some examples
